Roan Mountain TN Oct 9 to 12th and no internet or phone

We are spending a few days in Tenneesse / South Carolina to let Florida recover from Hurricane Matthew.  We chose to explore the Appahalachian Trail since we had been curious about it.
This pic was taken at the visitors center at peg leg mine.

This gives very good information about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly.
A deer in the park late in the day.
The cool evenings having it's affect on the fall colors.
We hiked north of here approx. 2 miles and south of this point approx 2 miles the following day.
The weather was perfect and the vistas were awesome.

 Mountain Ash
taking a break on a rock and enjoying the view.
 The views were spectacular.
We feel truly blessed to be able to do this.
Notice the tiny people ahead on the trail.
Magnificient view after magnificent view.
 How beautiful!!!
Notice our elevation of 5807 feet, we have climbed about 300 feet.
Our turn around point for the day even higher.
We parked the car at the Tenneessee/South Carolina line and walked both north and south approx two miles in each direction on two different days.
Frosty did just a little off-road parking.

Fall colors just starting to their appearance.
We hiked to Roan High Knob Mountain Shelter on our second day.
The hike was mostly up-hill in a stoney creek bed.
A rest stop with no cell phone coverage but lots of natural beauty.
 More trail up the mountain.
The following are pics of a shelter that is typical of accommodations along the trail.

This benchmark marks the highest point in elevation along the Appalachian Trail.  We had lunch on this rock. The climb was about 800 feet change in altitude
Pic opportunity at the visitors center at Peg Leg Mine.
Sign says "Danger don't go in there".
This is a closed ore mine.

People playing  in the water.  A trout stream where it was deep enough.

Day two and Three at Stoney Fork Campground and Wytheville VA area

If you ever come to Wytheville you have to have a hotdog at Skeeter's
I had two with the works and Becky had one with mustard. Very good

George Wythe was the first of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  Wytheville is named after him.
This museum is called "Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum" It is full of info and old gas pumps

President Wilson' s wife, Edith Bolling Wilson, was born in Wytheville on the second story above Skeeter's. A Hotel with her name on it is downtown. Now it is a Museum and you will notice skeletons climbing.
This is the largest pencil we have ever seen and it is part of the draw (tourist attraction)to Wytheville.
We traveled to West Wind Farm Vineyard and Winery.
Very pretty grounds and the wines were good. They are high enough to grow grapes used in dryer wines.

On Saturday we drove up Walker Mountain. It was rainy and foggy. You can go up the tower for a view, but there wasn't much point today.
Look closely and you can see two people that did make the climb.
We are just starting to get some color. We are suppose to travel to Asheville and then to Savannah, but because of the hurricane we may have to change our plans. Compared to the inconvenience and issue that those that live there are dealing with we have no problems.
